Advocate - 3rd December 2008 - National nomination remains a mystery for music teacher....
HUMBLED: Music teacher David Turner has taught thousands of students. So working out which one anonymously nominated him for a national award announced today in Canberra is difficult. "I've speculated but I've got no idea," he said. In his 30-year teaching career, Mr Turner has been a passionate influence on many budding musicians through his work in schools and with the Burnie Concert Band and EMUsicians. It will come as little surprise to those students that he has been selected as one of Australia's Most Inspiring Unsung Heroes. The Parklands High School teacher and 19 other people who work tirelessly to help the lives of others were chosen as part of the ABC TV and National Portrait Gallery "My Favourite Australian" awards. The awards also acknowledged 10 people voted by the public as the Most Popular Australians. Mr Turner admits he was overawed by the accolade. "Peter Cundall was one of popular Australians and to be alongside him is a bit awe- inspiring." Having turned 50 this year, Mr Turner would like to keep teaching for at least another five years. "I love what I do," he said. "I have been very lucky. I find it an inspiring thing to do. "If I've made a small impression on someone's life, then I'm very proud of that." As part of the award, a film crew visited Mr Turner in Burnie to put together a video portrait to be displayed in the National Gallery in Canberra. A documentary will be shown on ABC TV on Wednesday.
